Did you know that BWH’s Department of Food Services contributes more than 4,600 meals to needy children, women, men and elders in Eastern Massachusetts communities each year?
For the past ten years, BWH has participated in The Greater Boston Food Bank’s Second Helping program. Second Helping is a food rescue program that has been collecting and distributing prepared meals to hungry individuals and families through 24 local emergency feeding shelters and soup kitchens since 1989.
“Food rescue indicates that the food is surplus and perishable, and that it will be otherwise wasted,” said Paul Fournier, general manager of the L-2 kitchen, Department of Food Services at BWH. “The Second Helping program offers BWH the opportunity to help the community through food recovery.”
The Greater Boston Food Bank recognizes outstanding Second Helping donors annually. BWH is a “select” donor, committed to regular food pick-ups, which occur about twice a week. Additionally, BWH is the No. 1 hospital donor in Massachusetts, and the No. 2 select donor overall.
“It has been my pleasure to work with BWH,” said Jean Comeau, program manager, The Greater Boston Food Bank. “Everything runs smoothly in the kitchen, and the staff are so dedicated to the program. It is clear that BWH cares about and values Second Helping.”
